MTW Missionary

Pete and Renée both grew up in the Charleston, SC area.  Though both of their families were involved in the early days of Metro North Church, they did not spend much time together until their college years.  Shortly after returning home from a year at  Appalachian Bible College, where Renee received a Certificate in Biblical Studies, she and Pete reconnected at Metro North Church.  And after a whirlwind romance - every girl's dream! - they were married in January 2003.  In 2004, Pete graduated from Charleston Southern University with a BS in Business Administration.

In 2005 Pete and Renee accompanied a team from Metro North on a ten-day summer missions trip to Bulgaria.  They were excited to go and serve on their first missions trip together.  They did not anticipate that by the end of those ten days the plans they had for their future would be dramatically changed!

God used that first trip to Bulgaria to open their hearts and eyes to the needs of the Bulgarian people.  Though the community they went to serve was indeed very physically poor, it was the spiritual poverty that gripped them.  And the people, whose lives God had changed, that they felt so connected to.  They returned the following year for a one-month internship and then, in 2007, applied to Mission to the World as short-term missionaries.  Upon approval that November, they began the challenging and rewarding process of raising support.

Though their desire and expectation was to raise support "quickly" and be on the field by February 2009, God had a different timeline and plan for their arrival in Bulgaria...one that confirmed even more His call for them to go...and to go as a family. During the summer of 2009, after participating in their month long pre-field training in NYC, God opened the door to pursue the adoption of Renee's biological niece.  By May 2010 the adoption was final and by July their support was completely in.  August saw the Romans - now three - on a plane to Bulgaria with their teammates, Gary & Tammy Elliott.

Now in Bulgaria, Pete, Renee and Leora work alongside the Elliotts in Plovdiv, the second largest city in the country, as a sub-team of the main MTW team based in Sofia.  They seek to build up the local Evangelical church, working with their national partners in revitalization, community outreach and youth ministry.
